AI-driven freeze frame analysis, persistent vehicle memory, and a diagnostic agent that keeps getting sharper.
If you’ve been following OBDAI for a while, you know what we are building: the first real AI diagnostic agent for vehicles, packaged as a practical shop tool. Not a code reader with a chat window bolted on. An agent that turns live OBD-II data into answers.
Version 2.2 is a big step. Two major upgrades ship together — AI-driven freeze frame analysis and persistent vehicle memory — and either one would have been a worthy release on its own.
Let’s get into it.
AI Freeze Frame Analysis
Here is the honest part first: freeze frame data itself is not new. It has been in the OBD-II specification since 1996, and most consumer scan tools — even the $20 ones — can read it. We did not invent the data.
What we built is what happens after the data is read — and that part has no real parallel.
Most tools read the freeze frame and bury it. You drill four menus deep, you hit a screen full of raw numbers, you stare at it, you close the menu. The snapshot is technically there. Nothing useful happens with it.
OBDAI 2.2 hands the freeze frame to ARIA. To her it is just one more stream of evidence — read alongside the live PIDs, the monitor status, the VIN data, the vehicle’s history. She reasons across all of it together.
So when you ask ARIA “why did this code set?”, she is not reciting a code definition. She is reading what the engine was actually doing at the exact moment the fault triggered — RPM, load, coolant temp, sensor behavior — and reasoning through it the way a sharp tech would.
That is the difference between a tool that tells you “misfire detected on cylinder 4” and an agent that tells you “cylinder 4 misfired at light load with the engine barely warm — coolant was at 140°F when it set. That points at a cold-start ignition weakness, not a fuel problem. Check the coil and plug on 4 before anything else.”
The data is in the spec. The reasoning is in ARIA. That combination — AI-driven freeze frame analysis — is the thing nobody else is shipping.
The Loop I’ve Wanted to Close for Months: ARIA Remembers
Here is the part of 2.2 that I am most excited about.
Until today, ARIA had a strange kind of amnesia. She had full access to your scan data. She could read every previous diagnostic session, every code, every drive test. But she did not remember the conversation. She forgot what you and she had already discussed. Tests you had already run. Hypotheses you had already eliminated. Background information you had given her about your specific vehicle. All of that was gone the moment the chat session ended.
That is not how a good mechanic works. A good mechanic remembers your car. Remembers what you tried last time. Remembers that the customer mentioned the noise only happens after a cold start. Remembers what failed and what worked.
OBDAI 2.2 fixes this. ARIA now has persistent memory per vehicle, with unlimited history.
She remembers:
- The conversations you have had with her about each specific vehicle
- The tests you have already run
- The possibilities you have already ruled out
- Background information you have shared (driver behavior, modifications, mileage, history)
- The diagnostic path you are on
And critically, this memory is available to everyone — Free users, Premium subscribers, and PRO subscribers. This is not a paywall feature. The memory is core to how ARIA works.
Free users are still capped at 3 messages every 12 hours. But here is the thing — persistent memory actually enhances the free tier. If you want to play the patient game, you can have a real diagnostic conversation with ARIA across multiple days, three messages at a time, and she will remember every word of it. The cap limits how often you talk to her. It does not limit what she remembers.
The Loop Closes (PRO)
For PRO users, there is one more piece. ARIA’s web chat — which launched in April — could already remember conversations from the app. You could scan in the driveway, walk inside, open dashboard.obdai.app, and continue the conversation on your laptop. That was Phase 1.
What was missing was the return trip. After chatting on the web, if you went back to the app on your phone, ARIA had no memory of the web conversation. The loop ran one direction only.
OBDAI 2.2 closes the loop. Now the flow works in every direction:
App → Web → Scan again → App. ARIA remembers all of it. Every conversation. Every session. Every device. Per vehicle.
You can scan a misfire on your phone in the bay, walk inside, ask ARIA follow-up questions on the dashboard while you drink coffee, go back out and run another scan, and open the app on your phone again. ARIA picks up exactly where you left off — with full context from all three sessions across both devices.
This was a feature I had wanted to ship for months. Together with freeze frame analysis, it shifts what OBDAI is.
Plus: No More Lost Diagnostic Data
Smaller feature, big implication. Phone goes to sleep mid-scan? Adapter drops Bluetooth? Force-close the app? OBDAI 2.2 doesn’t lose your data. Every reading is written to your device as it happens and uploaded automatically when you reconnect — even from a previous session you forgot about.
Diagnostic data is hard to recreate. Intermittent misfires don’t perform on demand. When you capture it, you need to keep it.
Plus: A Smarter Premium Engine
While we were at it, Premium subscribers get an upgrade to the most advanced AI engine OBDAI has ever shipped. Faster reasoning. Better edge cases. Sharper on older vehicles with non-standard protocols and modified engines.
When the answer matters, you want the best brain on it. That’s what Premium is for.
Where This Is Headed
OBDAI is built with a method, and it is worth saying plainly: we are not chasing every shiny feature in the consumer scan tool market. We are building a complete diagnostic agent, and ARIA gets sharper with every release.
The long game is the one worth caring about. Today, ARIA reasons over the standardized diagnostic data every car reports. The real frontier is the manufacturer-specific data — the information dealer scan tools can read on your F-150 that nobody else can. Dealer networks have hoarded that knowledge for decades.
That is the moat worth dismantling. An AI agent that accumulates manufacturer-specific diagnostic knowledge across thousands of independent shops, and makes it available to all of them, levels a field that has been tilted toward the dealer for a very long time.
OBDAI 2.2 is a strong step in that direction. Freeze frame is in, and ARIA reasons over it. She remembers every conversation, per vehicle, across every device. The agent keeps getting better.
How to Get the Update
OBDAI 2.2 is rolling out now on Windows, Android, and iOS. If you have automatic updates enabled, you already have it or will have it within a few hours.
- Windows: Microsoft Store → updates
- Android: Google Play → My apps → updates
- iOS: App Store → updates
