Nobody is scared of a broken stereo.
A dead speaker, an AC that quit, a mirror that won’t fold, a TPMS light — those are annoying. You know roughly what they are and roughly what they cost, and the car still gets you to work. That is where factory-level access to body and chassis modules earns its keep, and it is genuinely useful.
The check engine light is a different animal. That is the one light that means something in the expensive part of the car — the engine, the powertrain, the stuff that strands you on the shoulder. And the cruelty of it is that it tells you nothing. Same amber glow whether it is a loose gas cap or a catalytic converter on its way out. So your brain jumps straight to the worst case. Am I fine, or am I on borrowed time? It is a mystery money part, and you have no idea which one, or how much.
And it is never a $20 fix. Not once a shop is involved. Even if it turns out to be nothing, that is a diagnostic fee just to be told it is nothing. If it is something, it is a number somebody else picks while you stand at the counter with no leverage.

The Data That’s Been in Every Car All Along
Here is something most drivers never learn, and — being honest — something most techs never use.
Every OBD-II engine computer is constantly running self-tests on itself while you drive. It grades the catalytic converter, the oxygen sensors, the fuel system, the EVAP system, EGR flow, misfires. Each test produces an actual measured value, checked against a pass/fail limit the manufacturer set at the factory. That is Mode 6.
The check engine light only trips after one of those tests fully fails. By then the part is already dead and the bill is already coming. Mode 6 is the scoreboard underneath the light — the real results and the real limits — while everything is still technically passing. It is where you can watch a part drift toward failure long before it sets a code.
The reason almost nobody reads it is that it has always been nearly unreadable. Cheap scan apps skip it entirely. A $3,000 professional scan tool will show it to you — as pages of raw hex and cryptic abbreviations that even seasoned mechanics scroll right past. The data was always there. Making sense of it, per vehicle, and tracking it over time, was the part that took hours nobody had.
That is the piece OBDAI 2.5 solves.
It Was Never About Smog
There is a reflex in the trade to wave this off: “eh, that’s only the generic stuff.”
The “generic stuff” is your entire powertrain reporting on itself.
This was never really about passing an emissions test. It is about performance. Anything degrading your drivetrain — a lazy sensor, fuel trims drifting to compensate, even a transmission that isn’t shifting the way it should — costs you fuel economy. And anything hurting fuel economy is, by definition, hurting emissions. That is the chain that eventually trips the light. Mode 6 is the powertrain grading its own performance, and dismissing it as smog trivia means walking past the earliest, cheapest warning the vehicle will ever give you.
Monitor Tests: The ECU’s Own Report Card
OBDAI 2.5 reads all of Mode 6, per ECU, and presents it honestly.
There is a factual Monitor Tests viewer in the app: every test, its measured value, and the ECU’s own minimum and maximum limits. No invented health scores, no green-yellow-red theater. The real numbers the engineers chose, converted out of hex into units you can actually read — volts, milliseconds, ratios. Tests are keyed per module, so the engine computer’s catalyst test and the transmission computer’s data never get blurred together. When a carmaker adds a proprietary test, ARIA still shows you the value, the limit, and the measurement type, and is honest that the label is manufacturer-specific rather than pretending to know exactly what it means.
That restraint is deliberate. A value sitting near a limit is evidence to weigh, not a verdict. ARIA treats it that way, the same as a good tech would.
You can just ask her. “ARIA, how do my monitor tests look?” She inventories the monitors, pulls the snapshot, flags anything outside the ECU’s own limits, and explains it in plain language.
The Part That Actually Matters: The Trend
A single Mode 6 snapshot barely tells you anything. One reading is a moment in time. The value is the trend — the same test, on the same ECU, drive after drive.
Every Mode 6 snapshot OBDAI takes is preserved in the cloud with the session it came from. That turns a one-time reading into a trend line, and that trend line is the whole game.
Ask “is my catalyst getting worse?” and ARIA compares the same test across your recent drives and answers with the actual trajectory. On the development vehicle — a 2017 Explorer — she produced a catalyst-monitor trend across four sessions: Bank 1 index moving 0.4453, 0.4297, 0.4258 against a 0.7852 limit, and concluded there was no indication of a catalyst approaching failure, the results stable and running less than half the limit.
Now flip that around. Picture the same test creeping toward its limit, drive after drive. You can see that months before P0420 ever sets. That is the difference between a repair you plan for and a repair that ambushes you — and for a shop, it is the difference between calling the problem and eating a comeback on a part that did not fix it.
Drive-Cycle Intelligence: How Much Driving Stands Behind the Verdict
This one was ARIA’s own idea during development, and it is quietly the most professional-grade capability in the release.
Every time OBDAI refreshes the monitor tests, it now also captures the vehicle’s drive-cycle counters — the federally mandated In-Use Performance Tracking data. How many drive cycles actually met the conditions for the monitors to run. Total ignition cycles. How many times each monitor completed versus how many chances it had. Plus the since-clear counters: how far and how long the car has been driven since the codes were last wiped.
What ARIA does with that is the important part.
She scores her own confidence. If the counters are low — the monitors have barely had a chance to run — she tells you the results are fresh and unproven. If the counters are high and stable, she tells you the evidence is mature and trustworthy. She states which one you are looking at instead of pretending every reading carries the same weight.
She catches cleared codes. Near-zero distance since the codes were cleared, on a used car you are about to buy, is the classic sign somebody wiped the history to pass an inspection or hide a problem. ARIA states it factually. That is a pre-purchase check no consumer app offers.
In the demo, asked how much driving her Mode 6 results actually reflected, ARIA answered straight from the vehicle’s own counters: roughly 20,800 ignition cycles, 6,400-plus OBD monitoring conditions met, the catalyst monitor completed nearly 4,000 times — a long history of monitor activity, with no evidence the codes had been recently cleared. She even worked out that the counter deltas between sessions added up to about a dozen separate trips in the previous week.
That is not a chatbot describing what a catalyst monitor is. That is ARIA reading your car’s real service story off its own memory.
Hands-Free, For Real This Time
OBDAI 2.4 introduced voice. In practice, you still had to tap the mic each time. It was not the conversation the demo promised.
2.5 fixes that. You now have both: tap the mic once to speak a single question and have ARIA answer, or turn on the dedicated conversation mode — the sound-wave button next to the mic — for true two-way, back-and-forth talk. No button in between. You ask, she answers, you follow up, she answers. Toggle it off when you are done, or it stands down on its own after about ten seconds of silence.
That matters because a mechanic’s hands are almost never free. You are watching live data, you are under the dash, you are holding a probe. In the walkthrough I ran the entire Mode 6 analysis from the driver’s seat at a car wash without once touching the screen to type. That is the point. ARIA was always the diagnostic brain. Now she works when you cannot touch the phone.
Also in 2.5
ARIA can ask for a photo. Building on the photo capture from 2.4, ARIA now proactively requests an image when a picture would tell her more than a description — the leak, the part, the connector, the sticker. Up to five per message.
Free-tier memory fix. A bug that reset free-tier conversations on every message is gone. Conversations hold.
Subscription status no longer flickers. On a flaky connection, your tier used to briefly drop to Free. The last known license is now cached per account, so paying users stay paying users through a bad signal.
Smarter web search. ARIA leans on live search for current or vehicle-specific questions, but skips it when the vehicle’s own data already answers — and she never fabricates links.
Newest-first history, everywhere. Sessions are delivered with the current state up front, so ARIA never mistakes an old snapshot for today’s.
Where This Lands
This release finishes OBDAI’s coverage of the SAE J1979-1 specification — the full generic OBD-II standard, every mode, not the slice most tools stop at. The next release moves on to J1979-2 UDS, expected late in the third quarter or into the fourth.
Put the whole picture together and here is what ARIA now reasons over on any vehicle you have scanned: stored, pending and permanent codes; freeze frames from the moment a fault set; readiness monitors; live sensor telemetry with statistics; Mode 6 monitor test results with their limits; the cross-drive history of those tests; the drive-cycle counters behind them; and the decoded vehicle identity. No consumer product assembles all of that in one place, let alone hands it to an AI that reads it like a veteran tech.
Your check engine light is the last thing to know. ARIA reads the evidence before the light comes on.
