OBD-II Standard Boundaries
The OBD-II standard, mandated by the EPA for emissions compliance, defines which systems are accessible through the diagnostic port. ARIA maximizes what’s possible within this standard, but some vehicle systems operate outside OBD-II’s scope.
Systems Outside OBD-II Scope
Body Electronics (BCM-controlled): – Power windows, locks, mirrors – HVAC and climate control – Seat heaters and adjusters – Interior and exterior lighting – Infotainment and audio
Chassis Systems (Limited exposure): – ABS — Some newer vehicles expose partial data – Stability control (ESC/VSC) – Active suspension – Electronic power steering
Safety Systems: – Airbag module (SRS) – Seatbelt pretensioners – Crash sensors
Security Systems: – Immobilizer – Key fob programming – Anti-theft module
These systems use different communication protocols and diagnostic addresses. They require manufacturer-specific tools.
What ARIA Can Still Find
Many seemingly “unrelated” problems show up in OBD-II data:
- Failing alternator → Voltage readings
- Slipping transmission → RPM vs. speed discrepancies
- Clogged catalyst → Oxygen sensor behavior
- Vacuum leaks → Fuel trim patterns
- Ignition misfires → Individual cylinder misfire counts
ARIA analyzes relationships between sensor readings that reveal problems even without explicit trouble codes.
Manufacturer Variability
Beyond the OBD-II baseline, data access varies:
- Some manufacturers expose extensive data
- Others lock down everything except emissions minimums
- Enhanced diagnostics require manufacturer tools (GM Tech2, Ford IDS, Toyota Techstream)
